Franconia holds the oldest documented bratwurst tradition in Germany, dating to 1313 in Nuremberg. The city's tiny Rostbratwurst, grilled over beechwood and served six or twelve at a time, carries EU protected status. Nuremberg's Bratwurstglöcklein, operating since 1313, claims to be the world's oldest bratwurst restaurant. Beyond the famous small sausage, the wider Franconian region produces its own coarser, marjoram-heavy variant. The Christkindlesmarkt each December sells an estimated 2.5 million Nürnberger Rostbratwurst.
