Dalarna, Sweden

Sweden

Dalarna sits in central Sweden, a province of red-painted wooden cottages, deep forests, and Lake Siljan. The copper mine at Falun (Stora Kopparberget) operated for nearly a thousand years and drew German miners who brought sausage-making traditions in the 17th century. Their legacy: falukorv, Sweden's national sausage. The mine is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sausage outlived the industry that created it.
