Droëwors Trail Mix
Recipes with Droëwors
A hiking and road trip snack mix built around droëwors sticks broken into bite-sized pieces, dried mango, macadamia nuts, pumpkin seeds, and raisins. No cooking, no refrigeration. This is the food South Africans take into the bush, up mountain trails, and across the Karoo on long drives. The droëwors carries enough salt that the mix needs nothing else added.

Ingredients
- 150 g droëwors sticks, broken into 3–4 cm pieces
- 80 g dried mango strips, cut into smaller pieces if large
- 80 g macadamia nuts, halved or whole
- 50 g pumpkin seeds (pepitas), toasted
- 40 g raisins or sultanas
- 30 g desiccated coconut (optional)
- Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
Steps
Break the droëwors sticks into 3 to 4 cm pieces by hand. They should snap cleanly if properly dried. If they bend instead of breaking, the droëwors is under-dried and should not go into the mix.
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and toss to mix. Taste and add a pinch of cayenne if you want heat alongside the coriander from the droëwors.
Divide into paper bags, small reusable containers, or zip-lock bags for transport. The mix keeps for up to 5 days at room temperature in a dry environment. Keep it away from moisture.
Tips
The sweet dried mango balances the high salt of the droëwors without competing with the coriander spice. Macadamias are the South African nut of choice here. Cashews or almonds work as substitutes. Do not add moisture-heavy ingredients like fresh fruit: they will soften the droëwors within hours. This mix travels better in paper bags than plastic, which trap condensation.
