Konnopke's Imbiss

Konnopke's Imbiss

Berlin, Germany

A Berlin institution under the elevated U-Bahn tracks on Schönhauser Allee in Prenzlauer Berg, running since 1930, making it older than the Berlin Wall and outlasting it. Max Konnopke opened the stand in 1930; his daughter Waltraud started serving currywurst here in 1960, the first in East Berlin, built on a ketchup-and-curry-powder family recipe that still goes on every sausage. Konnopke makes the wurst itself: a skinless pork sausage, deep-fried, sliced into rounds, drowned in the sauce, dusted with more curry. The Konnopke family still runs it.
